There are currently two prescription medications on the market to help people combat their addiction to tobacco. There is a cost for prescription medication and you can check with your insurance carrier for the exact amount. Additionally, your physician must prescribe the medication for you.

Zyban and Wellbutrin are brand names for bupropion hydrochloride, a medication that is used to treat depression. Researchers have concluded that the chemical in bupropion hydrochloride does help people manage their cravings when quitting smoking. This medication can be used in combination with nicotine patches or gum to further assist you in stopping smoking. There are a few side effects with this medication: some people report issues sleeping, having a dry mouth, bitter taste in mouth, and since it is an anti-depressant, some people actually have the opposite effect and feel depressed. Your physician should advise you if a certain medication is right for you.

Chantix is the brand name for varenicline tartrate. This medication works by blocking the receptors in the brain so there is very little effect from the nicotine if you continue to smoke. One thing people like about this medication is that you are allowed to smoke for a week after starting the medication  before you actually quit. You do this to build up a level of the medication in your system.  The effects of the medicine can help you quit in two ways: by providing some nicotine effects to ease the withdrawal symptoms and by blocking the effects of nicotine from cigarettes if they resume smoking. There have been some recent concerns about this medication—some people have issues with depression, agitation and anger and most recently there have been concerns over possible heart issues. More common side effects are constipation, vivid dreams, and feelings of nausea if you take the medication without food. You should talk to your physician to determine which medication is right for you.
