What to Expect When You Call

  • Expert advice: A nurse, respiratory therapist, or tobacco treatment counselor will answer your call.
  • An assessment of your tobacco treatment: They’ll ask you about your readiness to quit, history of tobacco use and previous quit attempts.
  • Customized Quit Plan: You’ll receive a personal cessation program that caters to your specific needs.
  • A quit-kit: Self-help materials, information about nicotine replacement therapies, and requested health information will be mailed or emailed to you.
  • Someone to talk to during your cravings: Whether you’re calling in for your weekly checkup or just need someone to talk to for a few minutes while the urge to smoke passes, we will be here.
  • Follow-up: We’ll check in with you on a weekly basis for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Thereafter, follow-up calls occur at seven months.

 Quitting tobacco: How it works

  • Getting Started - Participating groups and individuals receive instructional materials about our service.
  • Convenient access - Callers are greeted by a live professional counselor through our toll-free services, Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. CST, Saturday & Sun, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Voice messages can be left at any time after hours and will be returned the next business day. Information can be accessed via the Internet at any time.
  • Assessing needs - Professional counselors ask callers about readiness to quit, history of tobacco use and previous quit attempts.
  • Enhancement – Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) - The ITQL is awarding NRT (patches, gum and lozenges) to assist individuals with limited or no insurance.  The program offers a minimum of eight weeks of product to assist in the “quitting process.” The counselors work with each caller to determine the best option.
  • Customizing a Program - A cessation program is customized for each caller's needs.
  • Reinforcement - A quit-kit including self-help materials, information about nicotine replacement therapies, and requested health information is mailed to the caller.
  • Follow-up - Our counselors maintain weekly communication with participants for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Thereafter, follow-up calls occur at seven months.
  • Feedback - An evaluation of the program is completed by each caller.
  • Whole Health - Our counselors are qualified to discuss all issues relating to lung health. Physician referrals and information about tobacco-cessation medicines and treatments are also available.
